Home Talisman: Workshop for World Refugee Day

Home Talisman: Workshop for World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day is a day of solidarity with the millions of people around the world who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, persecution, or violence. For our team, it is a special day of support for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ukraine: people who face the daily challenges of starting over, seeking safety, and adapting to new realities without losing faith in themselves or in the future.

That’s why on June 23, at our Protection, Support, and Adaptation Center for IDPs “Art of Aid” in Dnipro, we hosted a special event for women who carry pain and memory - yet keep moving forward. Together with our partners from the Charitable Foundation "Rokada", we organized a traditional doll-making workshop (motanka), a symbol of strength, connection to one’s homeland, and protection of the home.

During the workshop, we discussed not only Ukrainian traditions, but also the importance of inner resources, emotional support, and reestablishing connection with oneself in times of loss and uncertainty. The motanka doll became a symbol of inner resilience and new hope for each participant.

After the creative part of the event, our guests had the opportunity to speak with a psychologist and a lawyer, receive individual consultations, and share their personal stories and concerns.

The most meaningful moments came during open conversations about the everyday challenges faced by internally displaced persons. Participants spoke about the emotional toll of losing their homes, the difficulty of adapting to a new environment, and the feeling of being “dissolved” in unfamiliar surroundings. Many mentioned the bureaucratic obstacles in obtaining documents, challenges with finding housing, and instances of discrimination - all of which deeply affect one’s sense of stability and safety.

Meetings like this are not only creative spaces - they are spaces of trust, where people can be heard, supported, and find the strength to move forward.

We sincerely thank our trusted partners from Charitable Foundation "Rokada" for their sensitivity to the needs of displaced people, their collaboration, initiative, and shared commitment to creating safe spaces for IDPs.

We believe: even after losing one’s home, there is always a place where you will be understood, supported, and reminded that you are not alone.
We are here. We are with you. From IDPs - for IDPs.

Warm regards,
The "Art of Aid" Team
